Magical Turkey Program

MAGICAL TURKEY  – Journey of the senses

30 SEPTEMBER – 6 October 2017

On this journey we will explore some of the ancient sites of South Turkey, feast our eyes on the amazing landscape and feel the beauty of this land. All of this will tickle your senses in a way that it can unleash some insights about the meaning of life and of your own life. Our themes to work with are beauty and peace, one cannot exist without the other and when we are inspired by so much beauty around us we can connect to that peaceful feeling inside ourselves. We invite you to come on this journey with us and open up your senses to connect to the god and/or goddess inside yourself. That part of you that knows exactly why you are here. Let the ancient sites trigger your memory and help you remember that you are from a long line of ancestors. Let the authentic beauty of the land fill you with a sense of love and gratitude for the earth that you are part of. And most important… let’s just enjoy ourselves.

Our program will mainly take place around the city of Fetihye located on the Lycian coast – the Lycian way is one of the most famous walking coastal paths of the world. Modern Fethiye is located on the site of the ancient city of Telmessos, the ruins of which can be seen in the city. Telmessos was the most important city of Lycia, with a recorded history starting in the 5th century BC. 0

A Lycian legend explains the source of the name Telmessos as follows: The god Apollo falls in love with the youngest daughter of the King of Phoenicia, Agenor. He disguises himself as a small dog and thus gains the love of the shy, withdrawn daughter. After he reappears as a handsome man, they have a son, whom they name ‘Telmessos’ (the land of lights). The oracle of Telmessos, devoted to Apollo, had great impact on the course of ancient history.

We will start our journey near the ancient site of Patara – Patara and Xanthos were the capitals of the Lycians. Patara was also the birthplace of the 4th century wonder worker St. Nicholas, who stood model for Santa Claus and in the Netherlands his birthday December 6 is still celebrated. Patara got its name from the son of the god Apollo, Patarus. Patara was known for its temple and the oracle, which was born to a priestess only during a specific time of the year.

Xanthos is the other site we will visit – Xanthos is the Greec name for the old Lycian city of Arnna, which was the place for culture and commerce. Xanthos has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1988. It has it’s own Acropolis and a famous Obelisk which has a recording of an ancient Anatolian language. It is a mecca for Anatolian antiquities and ancient history. Xanthos has been mentioned in old legends and books, like the Lliad.

Tlos ancient site

Another spectacular site to visit is Tlos – a Lycian hilltop citadel – one of the oldest and largest settlements of Lycia. Famous for its baths of which one had an apse with seven windows which is known locally as “Yedi Kapı” (“Seven Gates”), its seven arches overlooks the valley below. In mythology, it was the city inhabited by hero Bellerophon and his winged flying horse Pegasus. Tlos is surrounded by mountains which gives it spectacular views. Near Tlos is Yaka Park, maybe not an ancient site but a nice and cool water park where little waterfalls and flows of water give you that peaceful feeling.

Oludeniz Beach

Oludeniz is the most photographed beach in Turkey and rated as 1 of the top 5 beaches in the world – nestled in a blue lagoon and with a white sandy beach, it will give you the ultimate relaxed feeling. It is known as a paraglide area – due to a mountain right behind it which is the jump point of the paragliding. Our boat trip of the journey will start from here and will take us to secluded lagoons and beaches which are only to be reached by a boat.
